Art of Dyeing

The unifying element in my work is the organic nature of the materials, subject matter or process in which I work. I begin by creating a dye from commonplace materials and then apply it to either canvas or paper. The process is uncontrolled and results in unexpected visual anomalies. I react to the organic forms created with more dye, bleach, paint, and other media. While working on these abstractions, I am also painting large-scale realistic fruits and vegetables. I am attracted to these forms because they subliminally refer to the human figure without literally presenting it. They exude an undulating primitive sensuality. I am painting them in oils and execute more control over the material and process. The subjects I choose are rich in color and often are the source for the dyes. The two concentrations share an affinity towards an organic form and definitive color palette. Each concentration acts as fuel for the other.
Experimenting with materials led me to the work of Max Ernst and his use of automatic techniques. He similarly found imagery within unplanned territory. Helen Frankenthaler was recently brought to my attention because she too works with dyes on unprimed canvas. I also have looked at Franz Marc because of his ability to capture humanistic qualities in a metaphorical way.
